To possess a musical instrument and become proficient in its use is to become a member for life in the performing arts!
Children at the age of three are better equipped to engage in the learning process than an adult is at thirty, simply because they don't have any preconceived ideas and "baggage" about the learning process. They just immediately "see and do!"
When I was five, my mother started me on piano lessons. Since my feet couldn't reach either the pedals or the floor, I constantly kicked the sound board. Ergo the end of the lessons.
But Mom insisted that we all play an instrument. She purchased a used metal B-flat clarinet for $5.00 (a lot of money at the time for her) and, through a friend who played clarinet in the symphony orchestra, started me on a life-long love affair with the performing arts.
Now in my seventies, and having survived a hundred bands, groups, symphony orchestras, ensembles, wind symphonies, studio orchestras, dance bands, solo performances, recording sessions, etc., etc., I still make the occasional recording, but would be ever-so-more pleased to be able to start children on the road to their own life-long love affair with music.
That teacher, by the way, who played in the symphony orchestra and gave me my first instruction, is still performing! She is 87 now and I played a concert with her last year in a wind symphony at a major University. The music was written by a modern British composer, and he conducted his own music for the concert.
So, back to the work at hand. Obviously, the most appropriate place to start is with an instrument and lessons, and I just happen to know where you can start with the former:
